How do odometer rollback scams work today?

Older mechanical rollbacks have largely been replaced by digital manipulation through the diagnostic port. Scammers often target multiple control units to align a fake mileage across the engine, transmission, and dashboard. One of the harder-to-detect methods is a “mileage blocker” device hidden in wiring that prevents mileage from increasing in real time. Because modern tampering may leave no physical traces, a solid vehicle purchase process still includes diagnostics and a careful review of inspection and service history.

Why does mileage matter?

By verifying recorded mileage, you get a clearer picture of long-term wear and reduce the risk of buying a used vehicle with a rolled-back odometer — whether from a private seller or a dealership.
  • Wear estimate: Better sense of engine and chassis fatigue.
  • Service planning: More accurate timing for key maintenance items.
  • Fair price: Pay based on a more realistic vehicle history.
  • Fraud detection: Extra signal against digital rollback attempts.
  • Safety: Fewer surprises tied to hidden high mileage.

What do the STK stickers mean?

The red sticker on the rear plate indicates the month/year of technical inspection validity, and the green sticker indicates emissions validity. Since 2024, exact dates are not recorded on paper — validity is stored online in official registries. Stickers remain only a rough visual hint; for enforcement and resale, electronic records are what matters.
